Sempai is the word for someone who is senior of you. Kohai is someone who is junior. All students are Deshi. You usually do not call someone Kohai. It is disrepectful. Kohai should always repsect Sempai because they will someday be in their shoes. This is how the dojo works. You are correct in your feelings regarding this issue. I am glad you are reinforcing the system.
